Father's Day

When is Father's Day this year? History and Celebration Ideas

Father's Day 2026 falls on Sunday, June 21.

That's three weeks away. If your dad rides, that's enough time to get him something he'll actually use on the road, not another coffee mug gathering dust on a shelf.

Before we get to gift ideas, here's the part most people skip: the story behind Father's Day is worth knowing. It started with a woman standing in church after a mining disaster, and it took 64 years to become a federal holiday. That history makes the day feel a little more real.

When Is Father's Day Each Year?

Father's Day always falls on the third Sunday of June in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The date shifts every year because it follows the calendar week rather than a fixed date.

Here's a quick reference for the next few years:

Father's Day 2026: June 21 Father's Day 2027: June 20 Father's Day 2028: June 18

Not every country follows this schedule. Australia and New Zealand celebrate in September. Russia marks it on February 23rd as part of Defender of the Fatherland Day. The date varies because different cultures tied the observance to existing national holidays or religious traditions

How Father's Day Started

The modern observance began on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. A woman named Grace Golden Clayton suggested that her local Methodist church hold a service honoring fathers. She chose that date because it was close to the anniversary of a coal mine explosion in Monongah that had killed 362 men the year before, leaving hundreds of families without fathers.

The idea spread slowly. Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington picked it up after hearing a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Her father, William Smart, had raised six children alone after her mother died in childbirth. Dodd wanted a parallel day for fathers. She pushed the Spokane YMCA and local churches to organize a celebration, and on June 19, 1910, Spokane held what became one of the first widely recognized Father's Day observances in the country.

National recognition took decades. President Woodrow Wilson attended a Father's Day celebration in 1916 and expressed support, but Congress resisted making it official for years, partly because some legislators worried it would commercialize the holiday. President Calvin Coolidge backed the idea in 1924. Nothing happened.

It wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson signed an executive order designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon finally signed it into law as a permanent national holiday in 1972. From Grace Clayton's church service in 1908 to a federal holiday: 64 years.

What to Gift Your Biker Dad on Father's Day 2026

If your dad rides, a generic gift card is not going to cut it. Here is what actually makes sense for a rider:

Leather Motorcycle Jacket: A well-built leather jacket is the one gift that gets better every year he wears it. Look for genuine cowhide with CE armor pockets, reinforced stitching, and an action back built for real riding positions, not a fashion cut. At Renegade Classics, jackets start at $155 with sizes from XS to 10XL.

DOT-Certified Motorcycle Helmet: If his helmet is older than five years, it needs to be replaced. DOT certification requires it. A full-face or modular DOT helmet with an anti-fog visor and Bluetooth compatibility is a practical gift he will use on every ride. Our collection starts at $80.

Leather Motorcycle Vest: A leather vest is the most versatile piece of riding gear, warm enough for cool mornings, light enough for summer afternoons, and a single back panel ready for club patches or custom embroidery. A classic club-style choice for any Harley rider.

Riding Gloves: Grip, knuckle protection, and wind resistance riding gloves are one of the most-used pieces of gear and one of the most frequently overlooked gifts. If he does not have a quality pair, this is the move.

Guardian Bell: A small but meaningful tradition. Guardian bells are hung on the lowest point of a motorcycle frame to ward off road gremlins, a legend in biker culture. If someone else gives it to you, the legend says it doubles in power. Father's Day is the right occasion.

Personalized Biker T-Shirt or Patch: If your budget is smaller, a Renegade Classics biker tee or a custom patch for his vest carries more meaning than a generic gift. Riders attach significance to what they wear and display.

Father's Day Quotes Worth Sending

These hold up. No attribution padding, just the lines that land.

"My father didn't tell me how to live. He lived and let me watch him do it."  Clarence Budington Kelland

"One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters."  George Herbert

"A father doesn't tell you that he loves you. He shows you."  Dimitri the Stoneheart

"No man I ever met was my father's equal, and I never loved any other man as much."  Hedy Lamarr

One Last Thing

Father's Day started because a woman wanted to honor men who raised families through hard circumstances. That's still what it's for. The gifts are secondary. Spending the day riding with him, or calling if you can't, is what he'll actually remember.

But if you do want to get him something good, Renegade Classics ships nationwide. Father's Day is June 21. That gives you time.

Shop the full Father's Day gift collection at Renegade Classics, including Men's leather jackets, DOT helmets, vests, and riding accessories starting at $55. Free shipping on orders over $99.
